As I sit here and begin typing, I realize how frustrated I am with the messaging thrown at us about our health and how to protect it! To be honest, I am angry. We are manipulated through social media and shady sales tactics promising that one thing is better than the last! How much do we need to believe something is true before we wake up and face reality?
Here are some things we hear daily from people wanting to make a change when asked what they are looking for and if they have considered nutrition coaching as a (gasp) FIRST STEP.
- I just want to join your Bootcamp/CrossFit/Personal Training for now.
- After I get moving, I’ll be more motivated to eat better, and I’ll be ready to tackle my nutrition. I mean, once I’ve worked out, I don’t want to negate the work I just put in, right? (insert little chuckle from us both).
- I should drop a few pounds just moving more and that will help me get back on track with my food.
- I’ve done this before and I know what I need, so I’m not ready to discuss my nutrition just yet.
Our natural response to this is “Ok well let’s get you signed up and we will revisit the food situation later.”
Our hope would be that they get into the community, see others’ successes, ask questions, and begin adopting this lifestyle just by being here. Makes sense, right? This rarely happens.
The majority of people come only a few times, struggle through the workouts, and conveniently realize they are too busy to commit to a schedule. They decide this is too expensive to only come twice a month, so they cancel. Sometimes they say , “I’m going to try (insert literally anything here).”
By the way, they usually choose something more expensive. It’s not about money. It's about the expectation. We consider this a failure on our part. We failed to set the expectation and deliver the message appropriately to lead this client to success.
We own a gym. What kind of gym owner tells you that the workouts are not the number one thing? A stupid one, clearly. Actually, one that knows you are coming into our facility for help. You want results and you want them to last for the rest of your life. You want your family to see the real you instead of the exhausted, cranky, and unhealthy you! It’s in our best interest that you get what you want. If telling you the truth is what gets you there, so be it.
Stop focusing on outrunning your shitty diet!
Face it. Stand up to it. Attack it like your life depends on it, because it just might at some point. What the media is not telling you is the role that obesity has played in the Covid19 deaths. Before you launch your counterattack about how some perfectly healthy people have died, let me be clear. YOU HAVE A GREATER CHANCE OF RECOVERING FROM JUST ABOUT ANYTHING , THE HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE YOU LIVE! This includes cancer, traumatic accidents, heart attack…anything else! Will some die anyway? Yes, but why the hell would you let down your guard and make it easier to die? Don’t be overdramatic. We are all just here visiting this earth, let’s keep that visit as long as possible for those we love.
If you need to choose one or the other, YOU MUST CHOOSE YOUR NUTRITION!
The exercise part is important because you need your heart working . We provide an environment that can keep you in a community that encourages consistency. Let’s face it, we are awesome, and our members are amazing motivators for each other! I won’t even be humble about that. The people at Rock City Complete Fitness who have already walked through this fire will encourage you to come with them and make your daily life better! Being around inspiring people who want you to succeed keeps you coming back. Coming back is also known as consistency. That’s it. Doesn’t matter how fit or unfit you are, you have to have it to make progress. If you have the discipline to move consistently on your own, do it and keep doing it! If you don't, find some cool people to help.
But if you have significant weight to lose and you are only showing up to exercise, it won’t do you much good if you are still eating your way through the fridge at 10pm every night. Sadly, if you don’t know this going in, you’ll be eating more than you were before because your brain will be telling you the story of how great you are and how you deserve more food, “negating what you’ve done,” as you may have mentioned in our initial meeting. You won’t be making progress and you’ll quit because it doesn’t work.
By the way, you don’t negate the hard work you put in at the gym. It doesn’t work like that. You simply add fat to cover the muscle you’ve built, but that’s another topic.
Take a look at the hierarchy pyramid below, you see that the foundation is nutrition.

Like any structure, you must build from the ground up. It’s the only way to get what you want and help protect you from a shitstorm! This pyramid turned upside down wouldn’t be strong in the wind, now would it?
This is why we have started introducing the nutrition coaching to clients first. We want their success and believe in the power of nutrition as the number one priority. We want them to feel like moving again. We want them to see results and watch those results monthly, inspiring themselves to go further, move with more intensity, and live better lives for their families!
Creating healthy habits within your household is the best gift you’ll give your kids. Please do not underestimate your impact on them. What you do is what they will do. It’s the ultimate responsibility.
You will not need nutrition coaching forever . Our goal is for you to fly, little bird! The day your coach says, “let’s try this on your own and see how it goes” means you’ve adopted the habits that allow you to just eat instead of diet. You can come back if you need a booster month or two, but keeping you attached to us would imply we have some kind of secret. We don’t, we just believe you can do this. That is the secret.
The clear message here is that , if you want the maximum results in the fastest time, nutrition + exercise is magic. Nutrition only will get you started in the right direction, making you feel like doing more. But it won’t work the other way. Exercise isn’t fun or impactful without proper nutrition and eventually you’ll get tired of being too tired to exercise. End of story.
The idea that simply joining our gym is enough to get you back to the healthy you is false! You have to work on the whole you. Discipline and healthy habit building takes time and it is HARD. Telling you otherwise is misleading and wrong.
So if you don't want to do hard things, please don't join our gym.
We want to make a long lasting impact on the lives of those who join us. We want our members to look back and say that doing the hard work at Rock City Complete Fitness was the best money they ever spent and worth double what they paid! We will always be here when you are ready, but know that the expectations are high and we take your results seriously, no matter how long it takes!
